We've teamed up with Mira Herbert of Puzzle Heads to create our own line of Montessori Puzzles for Toddlers. After meeting her at a Montessori conference and seeing her beautiful puzzles, we both thought we'd make the perfect team. She's adapted her puzzles to make them suitable for children 2+ years and in-line with the Montessori philosophy. We're excited to offer her puzzles!
Here's what Mira has to say about her work:
My handmade puzzles have a strong inspiration from the Montessori philosophy as a result of my involvement with my children’s Montessori education. My puzzles are truly handcrafted from start to finish by my very own hands. I've designed and drawn the images, I prepare the wood panels, I silkscreen the artwork colour by colour on each and every panel using water based, non toxic paint, I finish them with 3 coats of non toxic water based varnish, I cut them one at a time with a scroll saw and I sand every single piece to ensure each puzzle is not only beautiful to look at but wonderful to hold. True old fashioned quality craftsmanship from my hand....to yours.
My puzzles feature a single subject matter boldly presented in the centre of the panels with lots of natural clear varnished wood surrounding the image. This showcases the beauty of the wood, the natural grain and draws your attention to the subject. My Ladybug puzzle is designed for the younger set from age 2+ with 10 pieces. It has chunkier pieces that are shaped like the body parts they represent. Each piece is labeled underneath with the name of the body part and the puzzle base is printed with insect facts. The printed information lends itself to sharing by a parent or caregiver - a mini teachable moment ready to go!
I love Ladybugs and I particularly love to draw attention to the fact that they can sport many different wing colours besides the ubiquitous red. This orange winged beauty was on my tomato plant last summer and I managed to snap a few pictures of it for later reference. This puzzle was inspired by that picture.
After you make note of the colour and count the spots, don't forget to teach your child the "Ladybug, Ladybug fly away home" rhyme!
These puzzles are created from my own original designs and drawings. They are made from Baltic Birch plywood 11" square (28cm) and 3/8" thick (1cm).
This puzzle will teach you and your child a little more about Ladybug lore, how many spots they normally have, and what colours they are (that's right, they're not only in red!).
